How many people really understand the meaning of Independence Day? This day celebrates the early colonies standing up against England and declaring that they should not be under English rule. This was eloquently stated in an official document and letter to King George called the “Declaration of Independence” written by Thomas Jefferson.

How independent are we today as the United States of America? How much are we controlled by the decisions and actions of other countries? How much do we owe to other countries monetarily? If the founding fathers looked at the country now would they think that we are in bondage, or unfairly taxed, or mis-represented?

Should we try to better adhere to the values and statements made by those men in Philadelphia 233 years ago or should just scrap those ideals and create new ones? There is another polarization. Do we lean towards the original Christian values that this country was established on or do we see those as old-fashioned and outdated and try to establish a new set of values for our modern times. Once again America’s two main political views lean in different directions because of the same polarizing factors (The Polarization of our American Political System).

I hope that everyone has an enjoyable holiday weekend and remembers what this day is all about. Thanks and happy fourth of July and Independence Day!
